Chocolate for breakfast?

At least once a week my daughter drops past for a walk, and talk ... and maybe a coffee or wine. The range of conversation topics is always interesting, last week we went from you tubers preaching their opinions on women's sexuality right through to guilty chocolate secrets.

Which made me hungry. And thoughtful. Would it be so wrong to have a breakfast of chocolate?

When it comes to breaking research on the world's favourite food, this definitely was the cherry on top. Headlines across the world screamed 'Eat chocolate for breakfast!' and 'Eat chocolate cake and lose weight!'

Too good to be true? Let's have a closer look.


What The Research Says

These claims come from two recent studies that looked at the consumption of cocoa in the morning. One suggested that the health benefits we love best about cacao, including boosting brain function, memory recall and focus, could be best used in the morning before the work day.

The other found that people who ate dessert for breakfast aided in weight loss, because morning is when metabolism is highest. Consuming cocoa in the mornings also staved off cravings for the participants, so they were less likely to sabotage their own diet efforts.

What It Doesn't Mean

So this means black forest cake drizzled with chocolate sauce for breakfast, right? Not so fast there, friend!

The health benefits of cocoa are definitely there when it comes to boosting up brain function, but a lot of those can be cancelled out with foods that are high in processed sugars. That's why we aren't all instant geniuses just because we're addicted to our daily chocolate fix.

The same goes for weight loss – the benefits of chocolate for breakfast just won't be there if you're consuming a day's worth of kilojoules at breakfast alone!

Does this mean you're doomed to eat boring, chocolate-free breakfasts forever? I'm not that mean – here's how you can make chocolate for breakfast work for you.

How To Have Chocolate For Breakfast

If you love chocolate, you can definitely incorporate some chocolatey goodness into your morning meal – but it's best to be smart about it.

Here are my three favourite ways to add chocolate in:

  • Get your smoothie on! Chocolate smoothies are a great way to dose up on chocolatey taste while still getting your morning protein, fat and fibre into the day.

    Try mixing ½-1tsp of raw cacao powder into a smoothie made up of your milk of choice, some chia seeds, a handful or two of spinach, ¼ avocado and half a banana. You'll feel full for hours, and it will taste just like a chocolate milkshake, only healthy!

  • Did you think I could talk about cocoa for breakfast and not include kkao Co.'s Cacao Tea? This is my current chocolate fix every morning. With all of the brain boosting benefits and none of the sugar or excess kilojoules, it's one of your healthiest options if weight loss is your goal.

    Cacao tea may also have a mild appetite reducing effect – I know when I have it in the morning, I feel no need to snack later on!

  • Just eat a square or two of good quality dark chocolate on the side! Or mixed in, if you prefer. Stick to at least 70% chocolate that is low in sugar, and either eat it with your eggs and avocado, or break it up and mix it through your yoghurt or muesli. 

    This is a great way to make sure you don't feel deprived, and gives you the sweet hit without being loaded with sugar.

    Breakfast Recipes

    Chocolate Breakfast Bowl 

    ⁣⁠Ingredients:⁣⁠

    • 2 frozen bananas⁣⁠
    • 1 frozen avocado⁣⁠
    • 1 tbsp protein powder⁣⁠
    • 1 tbsp cacao⁣⁠
    • 1 tbsp cacao nibs⁣⁠
    • 1 tbsp maple syrup ⁣⁠
    • 1/4 cup soy milk⁣⁠

    ⁣⁠Toppings:⁣⁠

    • Cacao nibs⁣⁠
    • Chocolate granola⁣⁠
    • Strawberries⁣⁠
    • Goji berries⁣⁠
    • Chocolate pot⁣⁠

    Method:⁣⁠
    Add smoothie ingredients to the blender and blend until just combined and creamy, serve and add toppings. ⁣⁠

    Easy Chocolate Granola (vegan friendly)

    Ingredients

    • 4 cups Rolled Oats
    • 1 cup of nuts -  almonds, pecans, or cashews
    • ¼ cup coconut oil, melted
    • ½ cup pure maple syrup
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 3 tablespoons cacao powder
    • ½ teaspoon sea salt
    • ½ cup dark chocolate chips
    • Flaky sea salt to sprinkle on top, optional

    Method

    • Preheat the oven to 160º C; Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
    • In a large bowl, combine the rolled oats and nuts.
    • Whisk together the coconut oil, maple syrup, vanilla extract, cocoa powder, and sea salt.
    • Pour over the granola mixture and stir until all of the dry ingredients are coated.
    • Spread the granola in an even layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet and press down with a spatula or your hands.
    • Bake for 30 to 45 minutes, rotating the pan halfway through to help the granola bake evenly.
    • When it is browned and feels dry to the touch, remove from the oven and sprinkle with chocolate chips.
    • Let sit for about 2 minutes until chocolate chips have melted, and gently stir in the chocolate chips to coat the granola.
    • Sprinkle a bit of flaky sea salt on top. Let the granola cool completely.
    • Store at room temperature in an airtight container.

    Chocolate Milkshake, Only Crunchy

    Ingredients

    • 1 cup of Kellogs Coco Pops (add more to taste)
    • ½ cup of milk (optional)

    Method

    Add ingredients to a large bowl and devour before your siblings or parents discover what you are up to
